How to report a missing person in the Nepal–Tibet glacial outburst flood

If you cannot reach a relative, friend or travelling companion in the affected valleys and border settlements, this is how to register a case and what happens next.

Before you start

FamilyConnect coordinates information and practical assistance. It does not confirm identity or death and it does not replace the police, hospitals, forensic authorities or your embassy.

  1. 1. Contact emergency services first if there is immediate danger

    FamilyConnect is not a police, medical or forensic authority. If someone is in immediate danger, contact local emergency services before anything else.

  2. 2. Gather the details you already have

    Full name and any other names used, approximate age or date of birth, sex, nationality and languages spoken, physical description and distinguishing features, clothing and belongings, the last known location and time, who they were travelling with, and their planned route.

  3. 3. Register the case

    Open the Report someone missing form, enter the missing person's details and your own contact details. Only provide information that helps identify or locate the person.

  4. 4. Save your case reference and access code

    You receive both immediately after submitting. They are the only way to see updates on the case, so store them somewhere safe and do not share them publicly.

  5. 5. Track the case and add new information

    Use Track a case to see the updates you are authorised to receive, request assistance such as travel or accommodation, and nominate a proxy contact if you cannot follow the case yourself.

  6. 6. Also report to the official authorities

    Report the person missing to the police, the relevant hospital, and your embassy or consulate if the person is a foreign national. FamilyConnect coordinates information; it does not replace those authorities.

If two people share the same name

Reports are never merged automatically. Each report stays a separate case. Trained staff may record a possible match only when several independent signals agree — age, nationality, languages, distinguishing features, clothing, last known location, travelling group and timing. A name on its own is never enough, and only a named external authority can confirm an identity.
